Rein Wolfs

On the importance of diversity

There is an enormous discrepancy between institutions specializing on contemporary art and the more encyclopedic museums. The first seem to function with a sharp profile, the latter get often stigmatized for their anything goes attitude. The first can work without too much pressure on attendance figures, whereas the latter easily get criticized for being the victim of political and economic expectations and restraints.

Rein Wolfs speaks on the possibilities of profiling a more encyclopedically working institution as the Bundeskunsthalle in comparison to the more specialized institutions (Kunsthalle Fridericianum, migros museum) he directed before.
