Saving Safe Space

In the context of the exhibition trilogy refaire le monde (2018), principles of intersectional activism have found their way into Helmhaus Zürich: The intersectional initiative die grosse um_ordnung literally installed this approach to activism in the largest exhibition space in the institution and brought it to life in workshops and talks. Since then we have asked ourselves how we can adopt these principles – of collaborating as opposed to working against each other, of living out inclusion as opposed to establishing new exclusions, of tearing down hierarchies between different forms of discrimination and different forms of art and activism – in our curatorial approach: How can we create a kind of safe space for a collaboration between people active in visual and other arts, activism, science, and social work? And what roles can curators assume in this space?

Daniel Morgenthaler, *1978, has studied English, German and Philosophy in Zurich and Sheffield. Since 2011 he works as a curator at Helmhaus Zürich (Exhibitions include «Talk to the Hand», 2013, «!Mediengruppe Bitnik – Delivery for Mr. Assange/Christian Waldvogel – unknown», 2014, «De La Fuente Oscar De Franco – Bluecore», 2015, «Elodie Pong – Paradise Paradoxe», 2016, «An Exhibition for You», 2017, «refaire le monde» trilogy, 2018 «of Color», 2019, «Florence Jung», 2020). As a freelance author, he contributes to artistsʼ monographs (Christoph Brünggel, Maya Bringolf, Valentin Hauri, Clare Goodwin, etc.) exhibition catalogues, magazines and newspapers like Kunstbulletin, Brand-New-Life, and Apartamento. He regularly teaches at the MAS Curating and the MFA at the Zurich University of the Arts and at the Bern University of the Arts, among others. Together with critic and curator Aoife Rosenmeyer, he established «Crritic!», a workshop programme concerned with critical writing in Switzerland, in 2014.
