Corona / Spectacle
The aesthetico-political implications of the Corona-Virus (and the measures against it) reinforce some general tendencies of late capitalist societies. They atomize, dematerialize, and virtualize social practice and inscribe fear and social antagonism into people’s daily interactions. Also, it increases phantasmic ideologies and collective irrationality. The talk discusses the relationship between Covid-19 and the Spectacle and tires to draw aesthetic conclusions from it.

Johan Frederik Hartle is rector of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He has been acting rector and professor of art science and media theory at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe. After completing his doctorate in Münster/Westphalia, research scholarships took him to Jerusalem and Rome before he became assistant professor of philosophy of art and culture at the University of Amsterdam. Hartle is Associate Professor of Aesthetics at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and Associate Member of the Institute for the Humanities at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada. His publications deal with positions in contemporary art, institutional art theories, political aesthetics, and the tradition of Red Vienna.
