From Clara Law to Haegue Yang:
Attempts to Represent(or Imagine) the Migrant Experience through Moving Image

This presentation will begin as a reflection on the two-fold project ‘Mobile M+: Moving Images’ which took place in Hong Kong in 2015 across multiple sites. It comprised an exhibition and a screening programme with over 50 international participants under an overarching theme of representing and imagining the migrant experience through moving image works.

The presentation will also be my attempt to delineate and examine the project-making process. It will highlight works by a number of the participants as a way to illustrate how the project was conceived and how it manifested. And more precisely, it will reflect on how such a project might look today with our now even more complicated relationship with the notion of the migrant experience.

Yung Ma (b. 1979) is a curator of the Contemporary Art and Prospective Department at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a role that was conceived in collaboration with the K11 Art Foundation. Yung is currently organising the solo exhibition by Cao Fei titled HX, which will open at the Centre Pompidou in June this year. Formerly Associate Curator of Moving Image at M+ in Hong Kong, he had been part of the core curatorial team for M+ since its inception in 2011, and twice co-curator of the Hong Kong Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2009 and 2013). At M+, he looked after the institution’s moving image portfolio, helping to define and build the collection while conceiving the ongoing M+ Screenings series (2016 – ) and the exhibition Mobile M+: Moving Images (2015).
